Your Home Should Feel Like a Haven! And to get you started, I’ve compiled a few of my most frequently asked questions and/or things I’ve observed along the way:
What’s the best way to organize a small space?
Organizing a small space can be challenging — But, NOT impossible. Just think vertically and make sure you are maximizing your space by using bookcases and shelves. Here are some examples: http://www.hometalk.com/1255277/craft-room
What’s your favorite organizing tool?
I actually have 2 and it’s really hard for me to choose one over the other because they are both AWESOME tools to use when it come to creating order in your home.
One is Lazy Susan’s I use them for everything from organizing my fridge to storing my paints in my craft room. Here is one “sister blogger” over at http://www.abowlfulloflemons.net used hers:
My other favorite is Clear Over the Door Shoe Organizers: In my humble opinion 🙂 there is no better way to take advantage of the otherwise dead space created by a door. I use them in kid’s rooms, pantries, bathrooms in fact I think over the years I have probably used one of these in every room of the house. Here is one idea I found on Pinterest:
Is it important to create a home for everything I own?
YES!! You will never be able to live your life organized unless you take the time to create a home for EVERYTHING you own…right down the paper clips and rubber bands!
This doesn’t have to be an overwhelming task (and I’m here to help each step of the journey) but if the things you own don’t have a home you aren’t really cleaning — you’re just rearranging your clutter.
Don’t worry — You’ll get there! One baby step at a time.
Life is to be celebrated. Everyday is a GIFT. We only have today with no promise of tomorrow == So Celebrate!
Celebrating special occasions is important but start celebrating Thursdays, Monday mornings and the fact that little Johnny ate all his Brussels sprouts!
This one is a BIG ONE to me and really one of the main reason’s I started my blog. There is WAY too much attention given to the bad things in life and NOT enough attention given to the positive.
My mission is to change that ”one reader at a time” 🙂
If I have a limited budget what can I do that will have the most impact?
Paint!! Nothing changes the look of a room, piece of furniture or even an accessory like paint.
Hubby tells everyone that I paint everything — If it stands still long enough.
So grab a brush or spray can and get started.
Make your bed!
If you’re not already in the habit of making your bed (as soon as your feet hit the floor every morning) then you will be ABSOLUTELY AMAZED at the impact this will have on your whole day.
It takes less than 2 minutes to make a bed and the ROI is Priceless!
Even children as young as 3 or 4 can learn to make their beds. (It may not be prefect — but neither is life!)
What is the best way to accessorize my home?
Your home should be a reflection of YOU– NOT Better Home’s and Gardens and Not your best friends home. Take the time to know what your style is and then your home will be beautiful regardless of what the “trend” is.
Laundry has to be done anyway– So why not make it enjoyable.
There are certain tasks you will never, ever love!! No matter how hard you try, let’s face it — there are just some things we don’t enjoy!
I think I am a very upbeat optimistic person and I can find pleasure in just about anything — but my “thorn in the flesh” when it comes to home maintenance is paper work.
I will NEVER love it, no matter how many bright colored folders I buy or how many way’s I organize it.
However, I have found that if I keep a vase of flowers on my desk, I can get through the task a lot quicker. There is just something about fresh flowers and a cluttered desk that doesn’t go together (at least in my mind) so I try to have them there …. ALWAYS! Even if it’s just a single bloom
So think about what it is that make you cringe inside and find a way to make it “doable without much pain” even if you don’t overflow with joy each time you do it.
Create ambiance in your home
Webster describes ambiance as: the character and atmosphere of a place
What kind of atmosphere are you giving?
Whether you like or not…when others think of your home a certain “thing” comes to mind. It could be the way your home smells or the way it’s creatively decorated. Just make sure you are giving the message you want to give.
What are you doing to pamper yourself?
Life gets busy sometime, but we need to make sure we don’t become so busy we aren’t taking care of ourselves.
This one is HUGE for me. It comes pretty easy to me to take care of others but myself — that is a whole ‘nuther ballgame!
I am getting better — but I have a long way to go, so this is an area where you can encourage me.
Learn to Putter!
We often become to familiar with our surroundings and so we don’t see things the way others see them so take a day every now and then and just “putter” in your own home.
Just walk around and try to see things in a new light. I call this “shopping at home.” One of my favorite ways to create a “new” look both in my own home and with clients is the re-purpose what I/they already have.
Go ahead give it a try…I think you will be pleasant surprised with the outcome.
Have a Detox day -from ALL things electronic!
It’s real popular right now to detox your body – But I would like to inspire – motive – push – (whatever it takes) you (and especially your children) into detoxing your mind and your home by taking ONE DAY every so often and TURNING IT ALL OFF.
Yes, all of it — Phones, TV’s, Radios —- Anything electronic.
If you don’t think you can do this for a whole day start with baby steps. This will probably be a LOT harder than you think (your kids especially will probably balk on this one)
But…..if you really want to change your life and the lives of your children — You have GOT to UNPLUG sometime!
You and your children will probably be “bored” out of your minds …the first 2 or 3 times you try this…but it WILL CHANGE YOUR LIFE — I guarantee this one!!
If you try this and you’re not AMAZED with the results….email me and I will do something VERY SPECIAL for you.
Don’t save the good china for company!
I am so grateful that the new trend for young people getting married today is NOT choosing a set of China.
Who’s idea was this to begin with? To invest and EXORBITANT amount of money on dishes you’re afraid to use. Does that even make sense?
However, if you do have one of those “fancy” sets of dishes — do me a favor and use it 🙂
Don’t just save it for company or holidays. Let it become a teaching tool with your children.
There are so many lessons that could be taught here I can’t even begin to go into them all…but for starters:
Manners — That people are more important than things — The art of dining — I could go on, but you get the picture.
Life is too short to save the china for Christmas!
Eat together AS a Family!
OK, I “could” get on a soapbox here (but I won’t) LOL
Our world seems to be spiraling out of control and yet we can’t seem to see the areas where the cracks are.
It’s called a “Family” for a reason. Even if your single or a single parent it’s SO important to “sit down” and have your meal. Turn off the noise and enjoy the taste of your food.
Enough said (for now) 🙂
Create intimate spaces for yourself and your family
We all need one little corner to call our own!
If you read my story you know I grew up the oldest of 6 in a home with no electricity or water inside the home but even in a 3 room house I was able to carve out a space that was “just mine.”
OK, so it wasn’t “inside” the home but I still found a way to get to myself and dream.
Fortunately we lived where I could take long walks and just quite my soul, and I confess I am NOT sure where I would be today — had I not found those places of solace.
If your goal is to have a home that feels like a haven then you’ve got to have a place just to ‘steel away and think.’
Stop waiting for someday
We all do it:
- Someday, I will get organized
- Someday, I will lose weight
- Someday, I will take care of myself
- Someday, I will look for a new job
What is your someday? What ever it is — Decide TODAY to do ONE THING that will bring you closer to making “someday” a reality.
Remember — A house is made of wood and stone but only love can make it home!
If you choose to follow me, you will hear this often but I believe it with every fiber of my being.
IT’S NOT ABOUT THE STUFF!!
You can hire the “best designer ” you know or organize “every nook and cranny” but if there is a spirit of discord in the home — It will NEVER (let me repeat — Never) feel like a haven!
Take time to nurture the relationships with your loved ones — Because at the end of the day — That’s what counts!
“Why do we love certain houses, and why do they seem to love us? It is the warmth of our individual hearts reflected in our surroundings.” – T. H. Robsjohn-Gibbings
